Introduction to Cold Water Swimming workshops at Westcountry Water Park
Run by our friendly, qualified open water coaches and lifeguards, you will learn all about cold water acclimatisation and how to safely prepare for a cold water swimming season. We will talk you through the mental and physical benefits, show you the type of equipment you might need as well as breathing techniques and all kinds of tips and tricks.
“I’ve always wanted to try cold water swimming but I was too nervous to try. The Open Minds Active team gave me so much confidence and knowledge about how to do it safely… I love it! I no longer dread the winter and never thought I’d be addicted to cold water!”
“Thanks so much for a great workshop, we felt very safe and feel more confident about cold water swimming now.”
Why?
Increasing research shows that regular immersion in cold water has incredible health benefits. You can read about some of the research taking place here. We are part of a national initiative where medical professionals are starting to prescribe cold water swimming for those struggling with depression and anxiety. Women going through the menopause have also found it incredibly beneficial and the social connections and friendships help everyone feel less isolated.
These sessions are designed to empower you with the information to do it safely and meet other people who you might want to continue to dip and swim with throughout the winter months.
When?
Our next workshops will start mid September and cost £30. Price includes a talk around acclimatisation, health benefits and safety, plenty of helpful information, opportunity to try out different types of equipment, ask plenty of questions as well as a guided swim/group dip. We can loan you a towfloat and swim cap (requirement at the lake for visibility) on the day. If you want to hire a wetsuit you can do so at the lake on the day. There is a cafe on site where you can buy hot drinks and snacks after.
Places are limited, changing facilities are on site and there is plenty of parking too.
Upcoming dates:
Sat 9th November 2024 9.30-11.30am
Sat 7th December 2024 9.30-11.30am
Jan 11th January 2025 9.30-11.30am
Who is this for?
This isn’t a women only session this is for all genders. You don’t have to be an amazing swimmer as this is about dipping not distance, however we do stipulate you are able to swim 25m unaided in order to participate. If you have a long term health condition please check with a healthcare professional before taking part.
*Please note temps in January, February are VERY cold, there is no pressure to get in the water and if you have not been acclimatising to colder temperatures then a wetsuit is advised. Wetsuits are available to hire from the lake on the day.
